's Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film. Critical response Upon its release, Spartacus received mixed reviews from film critics. The Los Angeles Times observed that, while this "latest adaptation of the celebrated historical novel is billed as a Roman epic... its epic scope is pared down to a personal one and the result is a succession of fraught, hard-fought battle scenes." In addition to the violence, the film also presents numerous sex scenes, gore, nudity and bloody battles in the Roman gladiatorial arena. Other critics were troubled by the film's generic tendencies. Variety described the film as "the weakest in the series... The battle scenes are well photographed and edited, but there is no sense of variety or pace in the story line or in the direction." The New York Times reviewer concluded that the film "is a smarmy, sugary production which has been assembled in collaboration with big money, no small achievement in the movie business." The reviewer for the Chicago Sun-Times similarly praised the film's production design and set decoration, and observed that the "sharply delineated faces, sleek hair, and spectacular costumes... lend Spartacus the look of a modern epic." In a more negative review, Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly said that the film was "a lurid and ugly effort" in comparison to the "taut and snappy" films of the series' early installments. He dismissed the film's "bloody" action sequences, and found the story "derivative, both on the Roman source material and on the revised '300' saga." Overall, Gleiberman concluded that "Spartacus is just a bit too turgid, too contrived, and far too mawkish to rise above being a maudlin shot of drama and entertainment."
